Sri Lanka has three beautiful botanic gardens Hakgala in up country an elevation of 1680. Peradeniya in mid country is at an elevation of 488 M and Henarathgoda in Low country. Peradeniya is 109 KM away from Colombo and 6 KM from Kandy. The longest river of the island Mahawali is flowing around it.
It has a historical value also. It named as Royal botanic garden because, before king to the last in Kandyan kingdom had a palace here. He passed away secretly in this palace. Lord Lois Mount Batton controlled the second world war and Asia staying here and hotel Swiss in Kandy.
Very close to the garden the famous Gatambe temple also situated
The garden is noted for its large number and great variety of plants, indigenous as well as introduced and contains over 4000 species and varieties making it one of the best and most valuable collections in the world. One of the main attractions is the Orchid House.
