Endemic birds in Sri Lanka





• Ceylon spurfowl (Galloperdix bicalcarata)

A rare ground, timid and sensitive bird which Can find in the dense forests of the southern part of the Island in wet zone. ‘ Ringing Crackel’ revealing its presence hearing from distance.

• Ceylon JungleFowl (Gallus lafayettii)

A ground bird which can find in any area around the island. Can tame and behave like a domestic fowl. Sinharaja is the best place to find them.

• Ceylon Wood pigeon

Handsome and large pigeon. Found in the wet zone. Very shy bird usually lives in small groups.

• Ceylon Green pigeon

Mote familiar with green pigeon. An arboreal pigeon lives in small florals and moves about a fool deal in Kithulgala , Sinharaja and Udawalawe.

• Layard’s Parakeet(Psitacula calthropae)

Can see at any area in the island. Lives in small flocks. Specially around Kandy, Kithulgala and sinharaja.

• Red faced Malkoha

Found in undistributed wet zone forests and in a few of the fall riparian forests and drier parts. Usually lives in pairs but sometimes in two or three pairs in feeding flocks.

• Serendib scoops – owl

Can found in the wet zone. So far can see in rain forests of the south west part of the island. Entirely nocturnal

• Chestnut-backed owlet (Glaucidium castanonotum)

Handsome little owl with a chestnut look. rare owl to see in wet zone forests. Lives in pairs in day times.

• Yellow – fronted barbet (Megalaima flavifrons)

Beautiful barbet is a common site in the country. A trademark in the wet zone forests. A regular member in the mixed feeling flocks.

• Ceylon Swallow (Hirundo hyperythra)

A slow flying swallow with reddish chestnut underparts and rump has a deep frocked tail. Found in lowlands and the hills in the island. It prefers open country

• Ceylon wood shrike (Tephrodornis affinis)

A small get bird with dark eye stripes. Can see in low country hills and in dry zone.

• Yellow eared bulbul(Pycnonotus penicillatus)

Montane species in up country high hills. Very common bird in frequent jungles. Usually found in pairs.

• Ceylon Whistling (Myophonus blighi)

Have a overall back appearance. Very rare and shy bird. Found mostly in Horton plains.

• Ceylon scarly Thrush (Myophonus blighi)

Rare shy forest ground bird. Large and long bill and chunky appearance. Spend most time in ground.

• Duskey – blue flycatcher (Eumyias sordidus)

Hill country bird. Blue forehead makes it easy to identify. Inhabited in wooded estates and gardens.

• Brown -capped babbler (Pellorneum Fuscocapillus)

Have a overall back appearance. Very rare and shy bird. Found mostly in Horton plains.

• Asht-Headed laughing Thrush

Lives in flocks mostly in Sinharaja. Very noisy bird. Found in wet zone and adjacent hills.

• Ceylon white eye (Zosterops ceylonensis)

Hill country endemic bird. More Widely broken in front than in orientalists’ white eye

• Ceylon Blue MagPagie (Urocissa ornata)

13ceylonhillwhiteeye Most colourful endemics in Sri Lanka. Inhabits in forests in hills and wet zones. A scary bird lives in small family parties up to six or seven.

• Ceylon Hill-Myna (Gracula ptilogenys)

HA black bird with yellow wattles on the nape and white wing patch. Inhabits in forests and well wooded country of the wet zone. Lives in small pairs or small parties.
